Women await discovery
By RODEBT KINSLER Special to the Register With the possible exception of Fullerton´s Berlin in the 1980s and Anaheim´s No Doubt more recently, few Orange County-based rock acts featuring women in starring roles have caught fire. That isn´t for lack of local talent. Jennifer Corday, Niki Smart, Bright Blue Gorilla and Punkture are among the most promising artists on the local scene featuring women hoping to follow in the successful footsteps of Gwen Stefani. CAROL MARTINI "Modern Loneliness," (independent release) With the ever-increasing number of coffeehouses and cafes opening in Orange County, artists such as Carol Martini really have found a receptive niche to showcase their music. The Newport Beach singersongwriter has been a popular performer on the folk scene since the early 1990s, but the release of her ambitious 17-song CD, "Modern Loneliness," should win her an even bigger following among fans who admire solid songwriting and hooky melodies. Martini is direct and honest as a writer; she pens toe-tappin´ songs that fall somewhere between the pop of the early Bangles and the folk muse of Tracy Chapman. There are plenty of songs to recommend on "Modern Loneliness,´´ including the powerfully rocking title track, an accessible "You Can´t Break A Broken Heart," and the more pop-leaning "Am I Losing You." Keith Lynch´s impressive lead guitar work fills the album, always showcased in the right moment rather than detracting from Martini´s tales about finding and losing love. Martini´s new compact disc release, "Modern Loneliness," is available at all of her performances. Or for more information, write her at: P.O. Box 27S3 Newport Beach, Calif. 92663.
